Cnn.com has broken a story on the Evangelical Manifesto, a statement made by a host of evangelical leaders about the evangelical faith of the last several decades. Keep you eye out for this when it releases in detail Wednesday. I will have more to say about it then.read more...

Does a Literal Translation Matter with a Digital Bible? (Hall Harris)

Over the past several decades there has been a lot of debate over the philosophy of translation of various recent English versions of the Bible. Generally this has centered around the two extremes of literal or word-for-word on the one hand (which has also been called "formal equivalence") and paraphrase on the other hand (formerly known as "dynamic equivalence," though today terms like "idiomatic translation," "closest natural equivalent," or "functional equivalence" are often used instead).read more...

Content Availability (mburer)

A quick note on content availability:
The internet has exploded recently with the availability of content. You can now watch an amazing selection of television and movies within a web browser. Case in point: I was not able to watch Bill Moyer's recent interview with Jeremiah Wright on PBS when it was originally broadcast. Fortunately the entire broadcast is available at www.pbs.org. (Check it out at http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04252008/watch.html.)

Make them good one by one (bhull)

Syndicated Columnist and Radio Talk Show Host Dennis Prager is on a quest for goodness. I recently heard him say that goodness grows one a person at a time. Evil, on the other hand, can and most often does happens in mass. While this is not an absolute, it got me to thinking about how we Jesus people try to change the world. We believe and have practiced mass evangelism, hundreds, even thousands of people have been known to "trust Christ" in a single meeting. Let's say that it is possible to get large groups of people started with Christ in mass. But is it possible to make them "good" except in a more personal way?

Christianity Today reports on Albania Manuscript Discoveries (Dan Wallace)

Of interest to the readers of PrimeTimeJesus: Christianity Today this week (April 23, 2008) published its article on the Greek New Testament manuscripts that the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts discovered in Albania last summer. It appeared both as a full-length interview in the on-line version of CT and a shorter treatment in the print version for May 2008. In addition, the on-line CT had a sidebar discussing the story of the woman caught in adultery (John 7:53-8:11).

Verhoeven Claim about Jesus is Old News April 24.08 (bock)

The CNN news release on the web that Paul Verhoeven, the Hollywood director and
Jesus Seminar participant, has written a biography of Jesus that
attributes Jesus' birth to a rape of Mary by a Roman soldier is old
news. In dealing with the theories of Jim Tabor in Dethroning Jesus (pp. 178-79) I wrote the following about this claim that goes back to Celsus and the late second century.

Once upon a time there was this little dog named Annie (bhull)

The wife wanted something to take care of, I volunteered, but she chose a dog. So three weeks ago our family's newest member arrived, Annie, a two year old pure bred Coton de Tulear, which is French for cotton ball. She is about 8 pounds, with white gray markings, she is one of those little over active things that reacts to everything. She was purchased for several thousand dollars by a Cardiologist in Newport Beach. They had her flown, first class I'm sure, from Texas to her gated ocean view palace over looking the Pacific. My idea of a dog is an old hound who sits at my feet and looks up twice a day. We had to apply to rescue Annie because the Cardiologist needed one less dog, all that grooming, plastic surgery, dog massage etc. was putting pressure on his budget.

Articles in the latest issue of the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus (JSHJ 6.1) (Bob Webb)

The latest issue of the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus is just out (volume 6, issue 1). As editor of this Journal I've always been pleased with its contents, but this issue is particularly interesting in its diversity: there is something for everyone. One of the features of this Journal that I've tried to stress is to foster conversation among the diversity of scholars involved in this field. Each of these essays involves such conversation in one way or another. The table of contents includes:

Interesting to See Reviews on Expelled April 18.08 (bock)

I am watching the movie reviews of Expelled with interest. It is amazing to me how many negative reviewers are claiming the movie is for Creationism and/or that it attempts to refute Darwinism when that is not what the movie does or claims. The movie is about freedom of inquiry. It simply argues that Intelligent Design (ID) should be allowed to come to the table.read more...

About EXPELLED, in Theaters Friday April 18 04.16.08 (bock)

I do not usually promote a movie on this site, but this is an excpetion. EXPELLED, starring Ben Stein, is a look at how the issue of Origins is handled on many campuses and other academic settings today. I addressed this movie in a piece on NPR about 10 days ago. read more...

Faust Anyone? Or "Have It Your Way" (bhull)

Faust was the fellow who sold his soul to the Devil. The story is a confirmation of Jesus' words, " What would it profit a man if he gained the whole world, but lost his own soul?" To be Faustian has come to mean the hubris resident in a person whose drive is to put themselves at the center of all things. No price is too high for the lusty high one gets when even for a brief time, when all things fall at your feet. This hubris is the sure way to defeat God's purpose in one's life. We have sold ourselves out to getting our own needs met through ministry, rather than finding the joy of living for others. One of the thoughts that has helped me to recapture my wandering soul are the words of C.S. Lewis.
